“Having that accomplished and having him here is like the biggest thing ever,” student Zainab Manzoor said.

Driver gave them a signed football helmet as a thank you.

“It was just amazing, there were like actually no words for it,” student Erin Hogan said.

Schools from across the area participated.  In total, 635,968 items were collected for Goodwill.

FOX6 Investigators: Bidding for bodies

MILWAUKEE (WITI) – In Wisconsin, when you sign up to be an organ donor, you are also signing up to donate your tissue. Tissue is everything that’s not a living organ, like skin, veins, heart valves, and tendons.

body partsAnd while buying and selling human body parts is illegal in the United States, tissue banks and publicly traded companies are making a lot of money on human tissue.

Chris Truitt, who lives just outside of Madison, Wis., is an expert of sorts on the issue. His daughter, Alyssa, died when she was only 2 years-old. Truitt and his wife decided to donate her organs and her tissues.

Swarms of midges make spending time outdoors uncomfortable

MILWAUKEE (WITI) — Anyone who spent some time outdoors this past weekend dealt with them. Swarms of midges or lake flies are making it a challenge to truly enjoy what the outdoors has to offer.

On Milwaukee’s lakefront, there’s a good, clean eco system. The bad news is, those lake flies like that too.

“If the water’s polluted and has a lot of debris and things like that they don’t do so well,” said Randy Allen of Wil-Kil Pest Control. “It’s been a good year. It’s been very wet and they’re just out.”

Trista Ziehr makes first court appearance in daycare case

OZAUKEE CO. (WITI) — Trista Ziehr ran the Family Tree Learning Center — a Cedarburg daycare, and is accused of knowing a child was being molested by a 12-year-old boy and not reporting it. Ziehr made her first court appearance on Wednesday, May 1st.

The Family Tree Learning Center remains closed down. It has been that way since April 19th, when Cedarburg police received reports of sexual assaults by a 12-year-old boy.

Ziehr had nothing to say as she walked into Ozaukee County court on Wednesday.

Ziehr’s lawyer told the judge she is pleading not guilty in the case. A criminal complaint alleges a mother told Ziehr a 12-year-old boy was molesting another child. Police say Ziehr, a mandatory reporter in her role as a daycare worker, did not report the allegations.

The judge released Ziehr on a $1,000 signature bond. She had nothing to say as she left the courthouse.

Thousands turn out to march for immigration reform

MILWAUKEE (WITI) – Thousands of immigration reform advocates marched through Milwaukee on Wednesday, May 1st carrying signs and chanting “si se puede,” which means “yes we can,” with the belief that this is the most politically opportune moment in decades to achieve immigration reform legislation.

“We have a great optimism this year that we’ll actually get some kind of reform done. The political climate has shifted. Before, it was always friction. It was always hard for us to get any good legislation,” Primitivo Torres with Voces de la Frontera said.

Democrats and Republicans in Congress agree on the need to address the issue.

“Paul Ryan was an original co-sponsor of comprehensive immigration reform,” Luis Gutierrez (D – Chicago) said.

Gutierrez says Ryan could hold the key to passing a new law.
