Avoiding Vehicle-Deer Collisions: Fall Driving Tips!

Avoiding Vehicle-Deer Collisions: Fall Driving Tips!

You may not pay much attention to those deer crossing warning signs on the side of the road, but statistics say that you probably should. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Information Institute (III), auto deer collisions are responsible for around 150 occupant deaths each year. Not only that, they also cause more than 10,000 injuries and over $3.6 billion dollars in vehicle damage as well. With adult deer weighing in at over 250 pounds, the potential for disaster to drivers should come as no surprise.

Dragonflies swarming up, down Lake Michigan

Dragonflies are being seen in large numbers up and down Lake Michigan this summer and a Wisconsin aquatic ecologist believes the weather and migration patterns are playing a role.

Dragonfly and damselfly expert Robert DuBois says Monday that common green darner dragonflies are a large species that are most often seen among the more than 160 in the state.

With the warm weather early this spring, dragonflies made their migrations north earlier to reproduce and nymphs are emerging earlier this season to return to the south.

DuBois says the heavy rains helped many insects, including mosquitoes that dragonflies prey on to increase their survival rate, and that wind patterns seem to have forced more of the green darners to the shoreline than on average.
